Bird migration has begun

Bird migration has begun - currently move Sub-Saharan migrants hibernating under the equator. The wandering strategy varies between species. Both adult and young individuals of Red-footed Falcon migrate even in several hundred-bit flocks. This year we have recorded a nesting of 25 pairs. Adult falcons and chicks are ready for long trip, respectively are preparing for it. At the same time, Slovakia is a stopover of this species during migration, so we organize an international night roosting counting, which we participate every year,“ says Roman Slobodník from Raptor Protection of Slovakia.

“Especially for the young birds, migration is the most difficult time of their lives. Many of them will not survive it. For some species only 20 percent of the young will survive. They may suffer by lack of food, unfavorable weather conditions, and often become victims of obstacles. During migration, birds most often die after the collision with glazed buildings or after a cat attack,” says Slobodník.

“Many victims are also responsible for the electric current or impact on the line (white stork, falcon, black-tailed eagle, songbird migrating at night). In Slovakia, energy companies play high attention to this topic. For example, more than 8000 flight diverters were installed within the LIFE Energy project in 13 Special Protected Areas,” says Lucia Deutschová from Raptor Protection of Slovakia.
