If you see people in the surroundings of the power line in next days, do not be afraid. These may be mappers who monitor the LIFE Energy project in order to find out, how birds react to the so-called flight diverters. These are special elements placed on the electric lines, which make the power lines visible for the birds - they notice the obstacle in time and fly over it. Which of the tested diverters are most effective in Slovakia, we will know after the control, evaluations will be completed in 2019.

Under the LIFE Energy project, we first identified those sections of power lines that posed the greatest danger to birds and lead to collisions. Since June 2016, energy companies have begun installing the first flight diverters, and since then their effectiveness has been checked. Within the LIFE Energy project, we are testing three types of the flight diverters: RIBE flags, Spiral and FireFly. 18 professionally trained mappers currently monitor the response of birds on the 43 km of treated lines of 22 kV and 110 kV. On the basis of the gained data we will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of each diverter in the conditions of our area and our species composition of birds. The latest flight diverters under the LIFE Energy project will be installed this year, all together it means 8,000 elements in the 82 km range.

During the 20 months duration controls of efficiency, more than 2,000 records of reactions of nearly 20,000 birds were made. The first results so far show that there is no impact on those sections of electric lines that are treated with special elements. Elements will be monitored until May 2019.
