The Red kite from the east to spend the winter in the west
Written by Martina Badidová Thursday, 25 February 2016 13:24In the summer of 2015, two juvenile red kites from northeastern Slovakia were equipped with HTs. Thanks to it were found a unique data - one kite has been wintering untypically near Galanta and the other has been staying in Croatia. The species is critically endangered; in Slovakia there are only 10-15 breeding pairs. Raptor mortality in the first year of life is high, they are exposed to a large number of hazards, so ornithologists were very pleased that both individuals are alive. Predators on their migration may come into conflict with dangerous power lines. We realize in our project LIFE Energy in cooperation with energy companies very important measures need to be taken so that these sections will be safe for birds.
