Project LIFE Energy as implemented in thirteen SPAs (Special Protection Areas) in the period of 1st September 2014 - 31st December 2019 and was aimed at protecting the ten priority bird species. Project pages are currently updated only on an occasional basis.
Slovakia is an important crossing of the winter migration of birds, for many it becomes a temporary home throughout the winter. There are species that cannot be seen at another time of the year. In the case of birds, their origin is determined by the territory where they nest. On cold days, birds from Russia, Estonia, Lithuania, Denmark or Finland fly to Slovakia.
"Winter peregrination is very demanding for the birds. Many of them die in the difficult conditions due to exhaustion and lack of food. Not infrequently a conflict with various obstacles such as wires power lines is observed. Fortunately, thanks to the LIFE Energy project and extraordinary effort of all energy companies we prevent this risk. By the research we chose the most risky parts within 13 SPAs, where also the important ways of wandering birds or their favorite food sources and nesting sites. Energy companies install flight diverters that make power lines visible and birds can fly over the lines without injury," explains Lucia Deutschová from Raptor Protection of Slovakia.
