The population trend appears to be increasing, and hence the species does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population trend criterion (> 30 % decline over ten years or three generations) (BirdLife 2013). The species needs water habitats; it occurs in reed beds, along rivers and open water areas of different size. The species is endangered with changes in the water regime of the land and degradation of wetlands. There is only one known site, where 1 pair of the Pygmy Cormorant was breeding in Slovakia. 100 – 750 individuals are being recorded in the winter period.
