"Balls“, „red balloons“, „flags“, „labels“, „spiral“, „combs“, „stickers“, „teeth“, „hedgehogs“, „highlighters“, „signs“, „visual elements“, „diverters“, „pig tails“ and other words where used by Slovaks to name elements installed on electric wires and columns in the country to protect birds from danger of electricity and collisions. It is obvious, that the electric wires threats to birds are known to public in Slovakia, also thanks to the “LIFE Energy” project.
This fact has been confirmed by the answers of on-line wide public survey accomplished in 2019 – the last year of the project realisation. The number of 466 people from the whole Slovakia as well as some of Slovaks living abroad answered our questions. Similar type of enquiry was carried out also in 2015 in the starting project period, when 560 filled questionnaires were collected.
We compared the answers of both surveys and the results have been pleasantly surprising. Some of them are in the charts bellow.
Within the 2019 public survey we ask also the following question: “Have you heard about the Project LIFE Energy?” Almost 60 % of answers were positive. Most of them have quite good knowledge about the project aim and activities; perhaps even they are more interested in details. They came to learn about the project issues mainly from social networks (30 %), web sites (24 %) and outputs in TV, radio and print media (13 %).
One in five respondents have met the project themselves attending some of the events organised for public (exhibitions, excursions, meetings). Without any doubt the project staff was successful not only in practical project activities as installing the bird flight diverters and nest boxes, restoring the souslik colonies, providing the rescue centres and others, but also in education, promotion and work with public.
