Saker Falcon

Saker Falcon (Falco cherug)

The Saker Falcon is qualified as globally endangered because it has undergone a very rapid population decline, particularly on the central Asian breeding grounds, owing to inadequately controlled capture for the falconry trade. After being almost extinct in Western Slovakia at the end of 80s the population of the species is stable and is growing slowly now in Slovakia, especially due to the specialized LIFE projects. The whole population breeds in artificial nests, therefore it is very important to focus the management measures to create new nesting opportunities and maintain the existing ones. It is also crucial to concentrate on management measures on feeding grounds. The breeding population of Slovakia is approximately 40 pairs.
